New release: Some Songs '25

a bunch of old reworked songs

About Some Songs ’25

Back in 2020, during the lockdowns, I found some old demos that I recorded on my first laptop back in 2005 – at the time, I referred to these recordings simply as “Some Songs” and would release them on MySpace.

My set-up back then was pretty simple – a laptop, a TASCAM audio interface, a copy of Cubasis, one of those weird pencil shaped microphones for vocals and a couple of guitars (a 12-string, 6-string and an electric). I was a lot younger (early 20s I think), so I had a lot of spare time, very little knowledge of audio production… and I wrote, and wrote, and wrote, and recorded everything, good and bad.

Anyhow, jump to 2020, I found these old recordings sitting on a hard drive. I listened to them, cringe slightly at the lyrics and my voice (I always cringe at my voice), but there’s a certain charm to them.

Annoyingly, some of the mixes on some of them are pretty bad – tinny sounding, vocals on the left of the mix, guitars on the right – a bit of a dog’s dinner really. So they sit there on my hard drive for a bit longer.

Skip to 2025, and with the advent of AI stem separation in Logic Pro, I can (somewhat) fix the questionable mixing from 20 years ago, and well, replace them with more questionable mixing and add a few things I couldn’t do back in 2005.

Admittedly, some of these tracks are here to make up the numbers and I personally feel are quite weak – that said, I’d rather they were “out there” and not just sitting on a hard drive. However, I’m still quite proud of a number of them; Smile, Edinburgh, A Sober Mind, Wish You Were Here and Another One are all personal favourites.
